Islamabad: The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Friday (September 10) approved Dir Motorway and Peshawar-Dera Ismail (D I) Khan Motorway projects, according to news published on Saturday (September 11).

A meeting was chaired by Minister for Finance and Revenue Shaukat Tarin and was attended by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Finance Minister Taimur Khan Jhagra, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Commerce Abdul Razzak Dawood, Planning and Development Minister Asad Umar, and federal secretaries.
The first project approved by ECNEC was the construction of the Dir Motorway at an estimated cost of PKR 38.991 billion. The project will be executed by Pakhtunkhwa Highway Authority (PHA) and will be sponsored by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government.
As per details, the project includes the construction of a 29.377-kilometre-long four-lane dual carriageway, starting from Chakdara and ending at Rabat. Under the plan, bridges, underpasses, cross-road flyovers, and tunnels will be constructed.
Another project that was approved in the meeting was Peshawar-D.I. Khan Motorway at the cost of PKR 276.529 billion. According to the plan, the project will include a 360km long six-lane dual carriageway from Peshawar to D.I. Khan. The said motorway will pass through Hangu, Bannu, Karak, Kohat, Lakki Marwat, and Tank. The project includes the construction of underpasses, tunnels, and flyovers.

It was reported that the construction of motorways will improve road connectivity as it will provide access to tourist spots. In addition to this, it will create job opportunities, which will contribute to the socio-economic development of the area.
