Islamabad: The federal government’s e-commerce policy will focus on the promotion and development of the country’s Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), a news source quoted Joint Secretary (WTO) of the Ministry of Commerce Aisha Humera Moriani. She further stated that this initiative was geared towards making Pakistan a significant player in the global and regional digital economies.

She was addressing a seminar on the e-commerce policy of Pakistan; which was jointly organised by the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) and the Ministry of Commerce and Textiles in the capital city.
She stated that Pakistan’s e-commerce sales previously amounted to over PKR 20.7 billion, but increased by 93.7% in 2018 to reach the PKR 40.1 billion mark. This progress, she opined, reflected Pakistan’s digital sales business potential.

She added that such policies would help increase exports through enhanced e-platform activity, generate employment, empower the youth, and improve the digital business landscape of Pakistan – especially in remote areas.
At the occasion, State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Deputy Director Sharoon Rasheed also highlighted the role of the SBP in promoting e-commerce activity across the country.
