Islamabad: The Advisor to Prime Minister on Climate Change announced that a large-scale olive trees plantation programme is on the cards for the areas suffering from water shortages, droughts and plunging groundwater levels, according to the news sources.
The forestry officials of the climate change ministry have been directed to formulate an efficient plan to cultivate 50 million olive trees, as part of the 10-billion-tree Tsunami initiative.

As per the media reports, this campaign will be executed with consultation from provincial and federal stakeholders on a priority basis, with special focus on small farmers. The drought-tolerant olive saplings will be planted in the drought-affected areas like Punjab, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh. The plantation drive will be boosted with construction of rainwater harvesting storage ponds in these areas, and efficient irrigation practices.

The campaign is expected to not only help with the water solution but also control soil erosion, promote soil conservation, increase green cover, counteract climate change and reduce edible oil import through local organic produce.
