Lahore: The Government of Punjab has collaborated with the World Bank to encourage drip irrigation in the province as a means of combatting water shortage, according to a news story. This is a part of the ongoing Punjab Irrigated Agriculture Productivity Improvement Project in order to overcome water scarcity, according to the spokesman for the Agriculture Department.
While giving details of the project, the spokesperson has added that drip and sprinkler irrigation systems for farms would be installed, all at subsidised charges. He also added that there is a need to create awareness among farmers of the benefits associated with this system and its ability to save water and increase per-acre yield.
He has labelled this as the need of the hour, and a move towards modern resource conservation as it allows for 40-50% less fertiliser consumption.
