Lahore: The National Steering Committee on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) Policy reviewed a draft of the proposed SME policy on Thursday, a news source reported.

Previously, the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) had prepared the said document upon administrative request. It presented the draft during a meeting of the committee, which was presided over by the Adviser to the Prime Minister (PM) on Commerce Abdul Razak Dawood.
He said that SMEs play a key role in fostering economic growth, as they facilitate employment generation and enterprise creation. He added that 99% of economic establishments in Pakistan were SMEs.
He also highlighted the issues faced by the SME sector. He lauded SMEDA officials for preparing the draft as per the incumbent government’s economic policies, which are aimed at creating employment opportunities as well as boosting exports.

The adviser said that the proposed policy would prioritise key areas in a bid to achieve sustainable SME growth – in addition to uplifting the country’s export sector.
