Lahore: The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) has passed ‘Disposal of Excess Food Regulation 2019’ to feed the deserving under the Prime Minister’s Ehsaas Programme, according to a news report. This regulation was approved unanimously in the PFA 31st board meeting held yesterday (January 2).

Commenting on the regulation, PFA Director General Irfan Memon Usman said that under the Disposal of Excess Food Regulation 2019, food leftovers from restaurants and hotels will be supplied to needy people. This law covers all related aspects, including ensuring the food safety and standards prior to supplying it to the deserving people.

He also mentioned that this law is the first of its kind to be approved in the country, and will effectively reduce food wastage. PFA Chairman Umar Tanveer said that a survey conducted in this regard revealed that over 40% of the leftover food in hotels and restaurants goes to waste. These regulations will stop this practice, and also feed the needy.

The PFA also announced that a points system is being introduced to recognize the efforts of hotels who will help feed the hungry, in which the PFA will give these food outlets reward points.
