As per the details, the project became operational last week following the partial diversion of the River Indus, directing a significant flow through the diversion tunnel and canal while allowing a partial flow through its natural course. The river diversion system encompasses a one-kilometre-long diversion tunnel, a 0.857-km-long diversion canal, and two coffer dams—one located upstream and the other downstream of the primary dam site.
During the visit, the WAPDA Chairman examined the construction progress at various project sites. The CEO, Project Director of Diamer Bhasha Dam, and representatives of consultants and contractors also accompanied him.
The chairman received a briefing on the test-run of the diversion system, with confirmation that both the diversion tunnel and canal are operating satisfactorily. Currently, construction is progressing smoothly at 13 different sites simultaneously.

The WAPDA is poised to achieve a significant milestone at the Diamer Bhasha Dam Project next week by sealing the upstream coffer dam. This action will result in the complete diversion of the River Indus through the diversion system, circumventing the main dam site and re-joining its natural course approximately 800 meters downstream. The Diamer Bhasha Dam, located 40 kilometers downstream of Chilas town, is scheduled for completion in 2028.
