Lahore: The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has launched the process of recruiting locals from Diamer and Gilgit Baltistan (GB) in an effort to reduce poverty and uplift the socio-economic condition of the area; as the pace of the construction work on the Diamer-Bhasha Dam picks up, according to a news source published on September 21.

The WAPDA advertised as many as 124 jobs ranging between Basic Pay Scale (BPS) 6-16 – for which only the locals belonging to the Diamer District and Gilgit Baltistan could apply. Previously, the authority had advertised 317 vacancies for security personnel and 179 vacancies of BPS between 14-20 – with the eligible candidates hailing from the same area be given preference.

Moreover, PKR 78.5 billion is to be utilised for the resettlement and Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) for the socio-economic development in the area. Reportedly, 44 development schemes have been launched to enhance the region’s irrigation, water supply, health and educational infrastructure. Furthermore, the 3-megawatts (MW) Thak Hydropower Project is also near completion and would help meet the area’s power requirements.
