Islamabad: The federal government on Tuesday announced that a total of 32,073 acres of land has been acquired for the development of the Diamer Basha Dam, according to news sources. The dam’s development is expected to be completed by April 2029, and it is being developed to meet the ever-increasing power and water needs of the country.

As per the information available, the estimated cost of the project is PKR 1,406,122 million. It includes PKR 175,436 million for the acquisition of land and resettlement (AL&R), PKR 479,686 million for the construction of Dam, and PKR 751,000 million for the provision of power generation facilities.
Reportedly, the Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan will be the guardian of the dam funds— with funds worth PKR 12,934,008,868 having been reserved for the project by the government so far. The incumbent government has additionally reserved PKR 15,500 million for the dam’s construction and PKR 7,000 million for AL&R.
As far as the project’s construction is concerned, the consultants have started their services for main works since last October. Additionally, the contractor for main dam works has been mobilized at the project site.

Additionally, the acquisition of land and resettlement is being financed by the government, PKR 106,897 million having been released for the PC-1 in this regard. For the dam’s construction, the government’s share equals PKR 233,686 million, while PKR 144,000 million falls under the share of commercial financing and PKR 100,000 million is being shared by the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA).
