Karachi: Residents of Defence Housing Authority (DHA), Clifton, Mehmoodabad, and other areas in the same vicinity should expect to face water woes for the next few days as a consequence of a pipeline that burst on December 12, resulting in a 70 million gallons per day (mgd) shortfall.
A news source stated that a water supply line measuring 84 inches in diameter burst during the inundation of University Road on Saturday. The pipeline was reportedly installed in 1958. On the same day, a valve damaged by a Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) dumper caused the situation to worsen, leading to a traffic jam.
According to Sikander Ali Zardari, a chief engineer at Karachi Water & Sewerage Board, repairs to make the pipeline functional will take another 24 hours and while the valve was promptly repaired on Sunday, it will reportedly take 36 to 48 hours for the water to recede. The affected areas will to continue face a 70 mgd decrease in water every day until the issue is resolved.
Zardari added that the situation is under control now and all necessary measures are being taken.
