Quetta: Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Chairman Lt Gen (retired) Muzammil Hussain on Monday said that the development work on the first phase of the Kachhi Canal and its extension was near completion, according to news sources.

The WAPDA chairman revealed this information while in a meeting with Balochistan Chief Minister (CM) Jam Kamal Khan Alyani. He said that the documentation for the Nolang Dam has been completed and the tenders for the project will soon be floated. He said that the project can store millions of acres feet of rainwater and floodwater – which could be utilised for power generation and agriculture in the province.

The chief minister further said that the completion of the Kachhi Canal project will boost the provincial economy and create employment opportunities. He also remarked that millions of acres of land can be brought under cultivation with the development and construction of water reservoirs. Alyani went as far as to say that ‘Balochistan could meet the food requirement of the entire country’.
