Islamabad: The provincial Deputy Commissioners (DCs) have sent details of over 100,000 kanals of benami properties to the Prime Minister’s (PM) Office, a news source reported. The DCs submitted a report to the PM Office about benami land worth billions of rupees.

According to sources, a significant number of benami properties identified were located in Sindh. The sources added that the PM Office has forwarded the report to the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) Chairman for further action.
The FBR had set up three different benami zones across the country. The taxation body has not only been identifying such properties but filing references against the beneficiaries as well.
Previously, the PM had instructed all DCs to identify benami properties within their respective districts. He had directed the DCs to submit a report by September 30.

Meanwhile, the incumbent government has approved an addition to the definition of ‘whistle blower’ in the Benami Act. Previously, the definition of whistle blower comprised of an ‘individual in the FBR’, however it now also includes an ‘organisation or agency’ that may submit a report under this specific act.
