Karachi: The Supreme Court of Pakistan Chief Justice (CJP) Saqib Nisar has ordered the illegal structures along Nehr-e-Khayyam be demolished, reported the a news source. The CJP gave the verbal order during his visit to the site, where he was accompanied by Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhtar.
During the visit, Akhtar briefed the CJP on the measures taken to clean sewers and rain drains in the city. Talking about his plans, Akhtar said that the sewerage lines channeled to Nehr-e-Khayyam are being blocked and soon after the canal is cleaned, greenbelts will be set up on the both sides. To this, the CJP instructed Akhtar to speed up the cleaning process.
While inspecting the canal, CJP inquired about why the illegal structures built on its banks weren’t already demolished, to which Akhtar replied that he was pressurized to stop the operation as influential people are behind these activities. Responding to this, the CJP told him to not worry about it and demolish these structures immediately and ensure that the both sides of the Nehr-e-Khayyam are free from illegal structures.
