Islamabad: The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) government recently signed a USD 2.4 billion deal with a Chinese corporation and the Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB) for the development of the 1,124-megawatt Kohala hydroelectric power project — a news source reported.

The project will annually produce nearly five billion units of clean and low-cost electricity to be used by consumers in AJK and throughout the country. This is one of the largest investments in independent power producer (IPP) in Pakistan and AJK.
The Federal Minister for Power Omar Ayub Khan chaired a meeting of the PPIB on Monday. On the occasion, he praised the board for its role in improving the state of hydroelectric power generation in the country.

PPIB Managing Director Shah Jahan Mirza took the opportunity to brief the meeting on upcoming IPPs. Considering the fact that a number of these projects may be delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, the board also approved of an extension for a number of projects.
