Islamabad: Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif has directed the authorities to link Thar Coal Mines with the railway network by March 2023, according to news published on October 6. Shehbaz gave the directives while chairing a meeting held to discuss the work progress on the project.

As per the details, the project would be jointly executed by the federal government and Government of Sindh. In this regard, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed between Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Syed Murad Ali Shah and PM Sharif. However, no timeline was issue for the signing of this MoU.
During the meeting, the premier directed the relevant authorities to accelerate the pace of development work. He went on to say that by linking Thar coal mines with the railway network, the local coal will be used in power plants instead of imported ones. The news source mentioned that this initiative will help save USD 2 billion annually.

The meeting was attended by the Federal Ministers Khurram Dastgir, Ahsan Iqbal, & Ishaq Dar, Special Assistants to PM Jahanzeb Khan, Zafaruddin Mahmood, and senior officers, whhile Railway Minister Khawaja Saad Rafiq and CM Murad Ali Shah joined through a video link.
