Islamabad: The last date for filing of income tax returns ends today after the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) extended the deadline from December 15 to December 17, a news source reported. The board said it will not extend the deadline any further.
The deadline was automatically extended as the last date of filing of returns fell on a non-working day. As per General Clauses Act, the closing date was automatically extended to the next working day, that is, December 17.
This is the fourth extension in the deadline for filers of tax returns as the board had originally set the deadline for August 31, which was later extended till November 30.
FBR had earlier notified the closure of all audits and waived the penalty for about 342,314 salaried individuals selected for automatic audit for late filing of tax returns from 2015 to 2017.
According to FBR, the decision had been taken in view of the hardships faced by salaried persons and to facilitate filers of returns. It exempted persons, who had declared income under the head of salary with or without profit on debt and/or dividend, from payment of entire amount of penalty payable by them under section 214E of the Income Tax Ordinance.
