Islamabad: Advisor to the Prime Minister on Commerce and Investment Abdul Razak Dawood on Wednesday stated that the country has a lot of potential for transhipment that can be exploited through the formulation of ‘the right policies’ — a news source reported. He made these comments while chairing a meeting regarding transhipment at the Ministry of Commerce.

The meeting reviewed the transhipment sector of Pakistan and the general outlook of businesses across the world. The Advisor noted that port charges and inefficiency in handling cargo were among the major reasons why transhipment was lagging in the country.

He suggested that the government should effectively regulate and facilitate businesses locally. He noted that Gwadar could act as a sister port for a number of other ports in the region; complementing them. He also felt that the country could finally achieve its real potential in terms of transhipment as Gwadar now had direct land routes to China, Afghanistan and the rest of Central Asia.
