Islamabad: For the first time in history, a database system for the power sector has been finalised for the next 22 years by the federal government, according to a news source. This database system covers both power generation and transmission up to 2040 and will be submitted in a few weeks to National Electric Power Regulator Authority (NEPRA).
This was revealed by Secretary Power Division Irfan Ali at a meeting of Senate Standing Committee on Power. This meeting was presided over by Senator Fida Muhammad and was also attended by Power Minister Omer Ayub. Ali stated that more focus was required on transmission rather than just on power generation as the installed capacity is 32,000 MW, while the dependable capacity is 26,000 MW. However, the transmission system’s maximum capacity is only 20,000-21,000 MW and the defaulted bills amount to PKR 900 billion.
