Gilgit: The Government of Pakistan is considering setting up economic zones under the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) in Diamir and Baltistan region, reported a news source. The proposal being considered is for at least four economic zones in these two regions.
For providing steady power supply to the industrial zones in Gilgit, construction of a tunnel on Indus River is also under consideration. This tunnel will provide water to the hydel power project in Bonji Das, which will general 40 megawatts of electricity. Similar hydel power projects will be set up for other planned industrial zones.
The news source revealed that the proposed industrial zones will provide employment opportunities to over 80 thousand people. According to sources from Gilgit-Baltistan’s labour and industries, a proposal for setting up Gilgilt-Baltistan Board of Investment and Trade is also being considered. This board will provide guidance to the investors and will also be responsible for issuing NOC for investment.
