Islamabad: The China-Pakistan-Economic-Corridor (CPEC)’s Joint Working Group (JWG) convened its sixth review meeting to assess the development and progress of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) around the country, news sources reported on April 9. Both parties expressed a particular interest in the Rashakai, Allama Iqbal, Dhabeji, and Bostan SEZ initiatives.

According to a statement published by the Board of Investment (BoI), the JWG was co-chaired by Board of Investment (BOI) Secretary Fareena Mazhar, and China National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) Director-General Ying Xiong. The NDRC representatives attended the meeting with the aim of improving business-to-business (B2B) relations between the provinces of both countries. The provincial NDRCs expressed their resolve to collaborate with Pakistan’s provincial BOIs to attract meaningful foreign direct investments (FDIs) and enhance B2B ventures.
Furthermore, the Geological Survey and Metallurgical Corporation of China presented the meeting with a proposal to examine the country’s a mineral and mining potential. On the other hand, the BOI presented the meeting with the proposal of creating SEZs on a government-to-government (G2G) basis as well as the CPEC Tower in Islamabad to improve collaboration and coordination between the two countries.

It is worth noting that the CPEC has already entered phase two of the project, with an emphasis on industrialisation. In this context, the countries have already formed a cooperative working committee to speed up project development.
