Islamabad: Under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), thirteen energy projects are being worked on throughout Pakistan, a news source reported. These projects have the total capacity to generate 8,995 Megawatts (MW) of electricity and will turn Pakistan into an energy-independent country.

Pakistan has remained an energy-deficit country for the past couple of decades, which negatively affected economic growth, as well as the country’s GDP. But according to Pakistan Economic Survey 2018-2019, the energy generation capacity of the country grew 2.5%, going from 33,433 MW to 34,282 MW within one year.

The joint venture of CPHGC’s hub coal-fired power plant under CPEC was one of the first initiative’s in this direction, increasing capacity by 1320 MW. Many projects for the energy sector under CPEC, similar to this one, are reaching timely completion.
Out of the 39 Earlier Harvest Projects (EHP), 18 to 19 were earmarked as energy projects. They were worth USD 34 billion, equivalent to about 70% of the CPEC funding basket at the time. Out of these 19, 10 were based on coal.
