Islamabad: The Supreme Court (SC) has announced an increase in the limitation period for filing all legal applications amid the COVID-19 pandemic, a news source reported. According to details, people would now have more time to file suits, petitions, appeals and other applications.

The apex court’s registrar office issued a notification for dealing with the problems faced by litigants in filing their applications due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation in the country. Due to the government-imposed lockdown, many people were hindered from filing their legal applications.
Exercising its powers under the Constitution of Pakistan 1973, the SC notified that ‘the Institution Branch of the Court at the Principal Seat and Branch Registries shall be deemed closed from March 22, 2020 to April 21, 2020 for litigants unable to approach the court on account of the lockdown’.

The notification clarified that the closure may be withdrawn earlier in case the novel coronavirus situation improves. It added that notwithstanding the statement issued, there should be no bar on filing the legal petitions, appeals, and other applications with the statutory period of limitation.
