Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan initiated the Ehsaas Emergency Cash Programme as part of his announced relief package for the underprivileged affected by the coronavirus infection outbreak in the country. Approved for 10 million people, the government planned to provide PKR 12,000 per family under the Ehsaas Programme. Now the government is targeting around 67 million people. Among these, it will prioritise daily wage earners and labourers that were not previously meeting the programme’s eligibility criteria.
Currently the Ehsaas Programme has three categories. The government plans to relax the criteria upwards for the second category, which involves people who previously earned up to PKR 20,000 and are now jobless due to the impact of the coronavirus infection outbreak. Meanwhile, the Ehsaas Kafaalat beneficiaries, who are all women, will receive an extra PKR 1,000 stipend on top of the existing PKR 2,000 allowance for the next four months.
Reportedly, the government will be identifying people for the aforementioned programs through SMS — allowing people not already enrolled to seek assistance from the Ehsaas Emergency Cash Programme. It will then start assessing the SMSs received back. The authorities will use data analytics to ensure that the programme isn’t abused.

The government will then proceed with forwarding the CNICs of those declared eligible for its income programs, to its partner banks. In addition, SMS messages will be sent to the selected citizens — directing them to collect their payments from the nearest branch of their designated bank.
