Islamabad: Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Director General Bashir Memon has ordered to launch an inquiry into alleged malpractices by housing societies operating nationwide – a news source reported.
FIA zones operating across the country will lodge criminal cases against the schemes in question. The DG FIA has directed to complete this operation within a three-month timeframe.

Meanwhile, FIA Islamabad Zone Director Fakhar Sultan has summoned a special meeting to discuss the matter. The federal institution will also constitute teams in a bid to take action against illegal societies nationwide.
FIA previously prepared a list of housing schemes operating across the country. In January, it submitted a forensic audit report detailing the specifics of the said schemes in the Supreme Court.

According to the report, at least 6,072 housing societies established inside the country were illegal. The number of registered housing societies stood at 3,053.
Of those registered, at least 667 were cooperative schemes. Similarly, the number of societies which had applied for registration was 1,716. Moreover, FIA in its report had sought legal action against 3,720 illegal schemes.
