Sukkur: The Sindh government and a group of Chinese companies have signed a contract for the modernisation, upgradation, and restoration of Sukkur Barrage, according to news published on October 25.

A statement was released by the project management office of the Sindh Barrages Improvement Project (SBIP) stating that PKR 17.07 billion contract was signed in Karachi with China Road & Bridge Corporation, Hydropower Construction Company Limited, and Hubei Shuizong Water Resources.
As per the details, the group will rehabilitate the structure, replace the main barrage gates, RCC jacketing of piers in canal head regulators & foundation overlay concrete, temporary river training works/coffer dams for isolation of a group of spans for foundation, hoisting system to work without counterweights, repair works in the stone masonry of the superstructure and Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) arches, replace all gates in canal head regulators, gate lifting motors/ electrical system for all barrage and canal head regulator gates, physical inspection/ repairs and testing for weakness, scour protection works at barrage and offtaking canals, installation of new 11/0.4-kilovolt (kV) transformers and standby generators, instrumentation and monitoring system with automatic data acquisition system, CCTV, and telecommunication system.

Additionally, the group will construct new buildings, workshops, offices, laboratories, and conduct renovation with matching monumental and aesthetic architectural aspects. The work on the modernisation of Sukkur Barrage will be initiated within a few weeks and is expected to be completed within the stipulated time.
