Islamabad: The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has signed a contract worth PKR 52.2 billion with a joint venture of two Chinese firms (Power China Zhongnan Engineering Corporation and GE Hydro China) to commence with the first stage of electromechanical works of the Dasu hydropower project, according to news sources.
The agreement was finalised on Monday by Dasu Hydropower Project General Manager and Project Director Anwarul Haque and GE Hydro China Deputy General Manager Aijun Xu.

The contract involves the design, supply and installation of generators, main transformers, six turbines, generator station service switchgear, and related equipment.
This run of the river project is being developed on River Indus upstream of Dasu Town in Khoistan District (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) by WAPDA. It will have a total installed capacity of 4,320 MW power and is being constructed on a priority basis under the National Water Policy. The first stage of this two-staged project is currently underway and is like to become operational in 2024-25.

WAPDA Chairman Lt Gen (R) Muzammil Hussain said that Dasu project would prove vital for adding a major quantum of hydel electricity and reduce the national grid’s dependency on thermal production and generate low-cost, environment-friendly electricity.
