Islamabad: Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan on Wednesday launched the construction work of the Diamer-Basha Dam project; vowing to build the ‘biggest dam in Pakistan’s history’, according to news sources.

The prime minister addressed the launch ceremony of the construction work at Diamer-Bhasha Dam in Chilas and said that the project will also benefit the people living in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB). He said that the dam will be his government’s third-biggest dam. He further revealed that the Diamer-Basha is a natural dam and is being developed on the ideal site.
The premier said that the government will proceed to develop more dams on rivers and it will lessen the burden on foreign exchange and enable Pakistan to generate its own clean energy – which will also preserve the climate. He said that this project will also generate opportunities for the tourism-dependent people of the region.

Earlier, the PM visited the site of the dam along with the Minister for Water Resources Faisal Vawda and Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa.
Special Assistant to the PM on Information retired Lt Gen Asim Saleem Bajwa also twitted and said the Diamer-Basha Dam will generate over 16,000 employment opportunities and 4,500MW of hydel power.
