Gilgit: Federal Aviation Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan recently announced that talks were being held regarding the construction of a new airport facility in Gilgit, according to news sources. The minister further stated that a plan to expand the existing Gilgit airport was also being considered.

The aviation minister revealed that a study was being carried out for the construction of a bridge to land heavy aircraft at the Gilgit airport. Additionally, while talking to the media, the minister stated that the Skardu Airport would now be operating international flights to promote tourism and trade in Gilgit Baltistan.
The minister disclosed that the Skardu airport would be operating all-weather and night-time flights and that various flights had already been initiated to the area from Karachi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Sialkot, and Islamabad.
He added that the Skardu airfield was among the world’s highest altitude airports, being situated at an altitude of more than 7,000 feet, but was fast emerging as one of the busiest airports in the country.

Reportedly, the Skardu airport will be declared an international airport next month, while its runway will also be expanded in order to allow for the landing of wide-body aircrafts.
