Gujrat: The National Highway Authority (NHA) has started the construction work on the 69-kilometre-long Kharian-Sambrial Motorway, which is an expansion of the Lahore-Sialkot Motorway (M-11), according to news published in the leading newspaper on July 29.

As per the details, the groundwork, worth PKR 42 billion, has been launched at the junction point near Kharian on the GT Road. An NHA official (whose name was not disclosed) mentioned that the possession of the project land has been taken by the NHA. The proposed route is being cleared of trees, bushes, and structures. In the second phase, the earth filling work will be carried out.
Moreover, the Main Motorway is 60-kilometre-long whereas a 9-kilometre-long portion of the four-lane link road will be constructed for connecting it with GT Road, near Bismillah Chowk, Kharian. According to the details, the said project will encompass five interchanges and a service area in the Gujrat district. It was revealed that a kilometre-long bridge will be developed over River Chenab, which will link Sialkot and Gujrat.

The official stated that the project is being constructed on a built-operate-transfer (BOT) model under a public-private partnership. It is expected to be completed within two years. The Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) will bear the cost of the construction.
