Quetta: Conditional permission is granted for the construction of high-rise buildings in Quetta after amendments made in the 1937 Building Code Act, according to news published in the leading newspaper on May 31. This decision came 88 years after the devastating earthquake of 1935, which led to significant loss of life and property.

Under the 2007 Building Code Act, before the construction of high-rise buildings in Quetta is allowed, certain factors should be examined including underground drains, overall structural length, soil testing, and ground clearance. If the said requirements are met, the construction can proceed.
As per the details, the aim of the revised Building Code Act is to prevent catastrophic devastation in the future. Quetta Metropolitan Corporation (QMC) officials (whose names were not disclosed) stated that strict action will be taken against the violators of the Building Code Act.

The officials went on to say that if the new regulations are followed, the buildings can be constructed without compromising safety standards. According to experts, updated building code incorporates various construction stages to ensure the resilience of buildings against earthquakes. It was shared that by considering structural integrity, foundation strength, and materials used, high-rise buildings can be made resistant to seismic activities.
