Swat: Swat Deputy Commissioner (DC) Junaid Khan has imposed Section 144 under which all types of construction along the Swat River are banned, according to a news story published on June 22.

As per the details, the directive to ban construction referred to Section (3), Sub-section (a) of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) River Protection Act. It stated that no individual must construct any non-commercial or commercial building or conduct any development work within 200 feet of the streams and rivers.
Moreover, strict legal action will be taken against the violators of the ban under Section 188 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC). The ban will help prevent residential areas from flooding and protect the beauty of the Swat River. The order also stated that the construction along water courses can only be carried out with the approval of the relevant authorities or departments.

DC Junaid Khan stated that the mismanaged and large-scale constructions on the banks of the river lead to encroachment which causes floods. He further added that the unplanned construction along the water courses undermined the efforts of the administration to make sure locals are safe from floods.
