Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government on Wednesday (January 26) signed a concession agreement for Swat Motorway Phase-II, according to news reports.

The agreement signing ceremony was held with Chief Minister (CM) Mahmood Khan, senior officials of Pakhtunkhwa Highways Authority (PKHA) and the construction company (whose name was not disclosed) in attendance. It was also mentioned that Chief Secretary Dr Shehzad Bangash, Adviser to CM on Communications and Works Rias Khan, and relevant senior officials were also present at the signing event.

Reportedly, the 80-kilometre Swat Motorway Phase-II will be developed on Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode, at the estimated cost of PKR 58 billion. The motorway will start from Chakdara and will end at Madyan Fatehpur. According to details, the said motorway will have four lanes that will be extendable to six lanes. the motorway will have nine interchanges including Shomozai, Malam Jabba-University of Swat, Chakdara, Barikot, Kanju, Matta-Khwazakhela Sher Palam, Mingora, and Madyan-Fatehpur interchanges. It was disclosed that eight main bridges will be developed at different parts of the Swat River. The project also includes four rest areas and link highways will be developed where needed. CM Khan, while speaking at the ceremony, stated that Swat Motorway is crucial for the sustainable development of the area. This project will promote trade activities and tourism in the area along with providing quality transportation facilities and generating employment opportunities.
