Karachi: Sindh Minister for Transport Sharjeel Inam Memon assured the Asian Development Bank (ADB) delegation that the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project will be completed within two years with the support and cooperation of the provincial government, according to a news story published on May 10.

Minister Memon held a meeting with ADB and Agence Francaise de Development (AFD) delegations to discuss the issues of Red Line BRT. During the meeting, it was decided that the delegation will have Zoom meetings every week to review the progress of development work. He assured the delegation that the provincial government will make sure there are no delays in the project.
Moreover, Chief Minister (CM) Syed Murad Ali Shah held a meeting with the ADB delegation, which was headed by Gia Heeyong and consisted of ADB’s Senior Urban Transport Specialist Lloyd Wright, Senior Project Officer Umar Ali Shah, and Director Urban Transport David Margonztern. The meeting was also attended by Planning and Development Chairman Hassan Naqvi, Transport Secretary Haleem Shaikh, and Finance Secretary Sajid Jamal Abro.
During the meeting, the minister assured the ADB delegation that the problems related to the Red Line BRT will be resolved on a priority basis and work will be completed within a stipulated time. The delegation stated that there were issues pertaining to the transfer of land for the development of a biogas plant at the Cattle Colony, and the availability of some bus depots. In response to this, the CM Shah notified that 32 acres of land has been reserved for the plant and directives have been issued for the title change. As far as bus depots are concerned, the proposed sites will be vacated once the work begins on the available depots. The minister asked the delegation for assistance and support to integrate Red Line BRT with other BRTs.

It is important to note that the Red Line BRT was launched last month. The route of the said project stretches over 26-kilometres from Model Colony in Malir to Merewether Tower. The bus service will also cover University Road, M.A Jinnah Road and its extension road and Numaish Chowrangi.
