Lahore: The housing department has constituted a committee that has been tasked to suggest amendments in the Lahore Development Authority Act, 1975 – a news source reported. The government is seeking amendments in the LDA Act in its bid to construct low-cost residential units, under the Naya Pakistan Housing Programme (NPHP).

The chief town planner has been appointed as convener of the committee. Other members include Chief Metropolitan Planner Ibrar Sheikh, and Deputy Secretary Housing Waheed Butt. The committee, which will also suggest policies to promote the housing sector, has been asked to submit its recommendations to the housing secretary in 20 days.
The Punjab Government had previously identified land for the project. A layout plan will be finalised till March after which the project will be formally inaugurated in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Sialkot and Faisalabad. A campaign to invite applications for the project will begin next week.

The government plans to construct five million affordable residential units in five years under NPHP. Another 10,000 residential units will be completed by June 2019. Several welfare organisations have collaborated with the government on the project.
