Karachi: The city administration has constituted a committee comprising civil engineers, horticulturists, and architects in its bid to restore the iconic Empress Market, a news source reported. A plan to this effect has already been devised.
Karachi Mayor Wasim Akhtar and Commissioner Iftikhar Shalwani jointly chaired the inaugural session of the committee. Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Syed Saif-ur-Rehman, horticulture and construction expert Liaquat Ali Khan, Shahid Feroz, Yawar Abbas, Shahid Abdullah, Tariq Huda, Muhammad Asim, Komal Perwaiz, Durriya Qazi, Marvi Mazhar and Parks Director Afaq Mirza also attended the session.

The participants were of the view that Karachi must be restored to its glory by all possible means necessary and that such a huge task requires planning for the next 200 years.
The officials concerned briefed the meeting about plans for the restoration of the area surrounding Empress Market. Mayor Wasim Akhtar said the city administration would collaborate with heritage experts to chalk out a comprehensive plan regarding beautification of the area surrounding the British era establishment.
Akhtar said that the public would be informed prior to implementing the plan, which will be displayed in front of the main building for public information. Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Saif-ur-Rehman said the restoration work would be completed in two phases.
