Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has ordered the launch of a comprehensive registration drive for workers employed in shops, workshops, and small enterprises across the province. The initiative aims to ensure that workers in these sectors are formally registered and become eligible for grants and various financial benefits through the Labour Department.
During a meeting with Provincial Minister for Labour Faisal Ayub Khokhar, CM Maryam Nawaz emphasized the importance of this policy shift, marking the first time in Punjab’s history that workers in small businesses and industrial units will be formally registered. She instructed authorities to prioritize the registration process and ensure that workers benefit from the available support.

The Chief Minister also stressed the importance of enforcing minimum wage laws across all sectors, including shops, petrol pumps, and factories in Punjab. She directed that a strict crackdown be launched on enterprises that fail to comply with minimum wage regulations, highlighting the provincial government’s commitment to improving the economic well-being of workers.
In addition to the worker registration drive, CM Maryam Nawaz outlined plans to introduce a ration card program specifically designed for labourers. This initiative aims to strengthen the social and economic security of workers by providing them with access to essential food items and other necessities at affordable prices.
The Chief Minister also expressed her deep sorrow over the tragic death of a minor child due to electrocution at Shahdara Teaching Hospital. She ordered an immediate report from the health secretary and instructed that strict legal action be taken against those responsible after a thorough investigation.

On a positive note, CM Maryam Nawaz highlighted the Punjab government’s success during Ramazan, where Sahulat Bazaars provided significant relief to the public. The smart and efficient policy implemented by the government saved an impressive Rs1.1 billion, ensuring that essential food items were available at affordable rates across the province.
This new initiative is expected to pave the way for improved working conditions, better welfare support for workers, and enhanced social security in the province.
