Peshawar: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister (CM) Mahmood Khan has approved the draft of the Land Use & Building Control Act, 2021, news sources reported. The bill is seen as a major step toward curbing the unplanned urbanisation and conversion of agricultural land and green areas into illegally constructed developments.

The CM while presiding over the meeting directed the concerned departments to present the bill before the provincial cabinet followed by seeking approval from the provincial assembly. The proposed bill contains the structure and functioning of the Land Use & Building Control authority. The bill outlines three major functions of the authority which are as follows:
- Protection of agricultural land
- Curbing illegal development on protected land
- Master plan development for the KP districts
Similarly following structural and overseeing committees have been proposed:
- Land and Building Control Authority
- The provincial council responsible for policy proposals and overseeing the implementation of the law, the following will be the structure of the committee:
- The CM as the head of the committee
- Provincial Cabinet members
- Secretaries of the concerned authorities and departments
- Private members and experts
- District committee headed by the Deputy Commissioner and responsible for foreseeing the implementation for the district master plan
- Establishment of tribunals to hear and resolve citizen complaints regarding the grievances of land use.

The CM was also informed about the completion of the master plan of six districts. Responding to that, he directed the concerned authorities to expedite work on the master plan formation of the remaining 20 districts. He stressed that plan should be formed keeping in mind the districts’ needs for the next 30 years as a target.
