Karachi: Sindh Caretaker Chief Minister (CM) Justice (Retd) Maqbool Baqar is set to implement an Urban Rebuilding Plan for the redevelopment of old quarters, including Martin, Clayton, Jahangir, and Pakistan Quarters, as revealed in a news source on January 19.

As per the details, to facilitate this initiative, CM Baqar has decided to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Federal Ministry of Housing & Works. This decision emerged during a meeting held via video link, where Federal Secretary of Housing & Works, Dr. Shahzad Bangash, and his team participated from Islamabad. CM Baqar, assisted by Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, P&D Chairman Shakil Mangnejo, Local Government Secretary Manzoor Shaikh, P&D DG Asad Zamin, and others, presented the Urban Rebuilding Plan.
Under this plan, high-rise plazas will be constructed on the vacant plots of the mentioned old quarters, which are currently in a dilapidated condition. The CM emphasised that the primary goals of the urban rejuvenation project are to enhance housing conditions, upgrade infrastructure and public services, boost economic activity in the areas, and create new job and economic opportunities.

The Federal Secretary for Housing shared a similar plan, and it was mutually agreed to sign an MOU between the Sindh government and the federal government to move the project forward. CM Baqar instructed his team to draft the MOU and share it with the federal government for signing within the next two weeks.
