Islamabad: The Ministry of Climate Change (MoCC) has been instructed to form an inter-ministries committee to create a timeframe for the formation of the Electric Vehicles (EV) policy, according to a news source. As per the publication, the ministry will consult with automobile manufacturers and stakeholders in this regard.

The MoCC will form a committee for this purpose, which will address the concerns and reservations of all relevant stakeholders. This decision was made in a federal cabinet meeting, where the cabinet approved a draft of the ‘National Electric Vehicles Policy’ in principle.

The draft states that electric vehicles will be beneficial for the country’s economy, and will directly reduce the fuel import bill. According to the draft, this reduction will amount to PKR 54.5 billion annually. In addition, the reduction in emissions will save Pakistan PKR 12.5 billion in social and economic expenses. A further PKR 10.7 billion will be saved in the maintenance of vehicles. Moreover, income worth PKR 19.7 billion shall be generated from the charging of electric vehicles. A business model is in the works for the production of electric vehicles, along with the localisation of their manufacturing.
