Peshawar: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Local Government (LG) Secretary Mian Shakeel Ahmed has directed the city administrations of Mingora and the Malakand Division to see to the districts’ cleanliness on a daily basis — putting particular emphasis on their tourist spots, a news source reported. In addition, he approved of a crackdown against encroachers and directed the officials concerned to remove illegal billboards and hoardings from the area.

Secretary Ahmed gave these orders while presiding over a meeting held after his visit to Swat. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Town Municipal Office and LG assistant directors. The secretary took this opportunity to invite the residents of Swat, local traders, the business community and members of the hotels’ associations to also play their part in making Swat and Malakand cleaner.

The LG secretary also highlighted the fact that ensuring cleanliness in the area required no additional expense, as the LG already had the machinery and work force available to perform this task. He also directed the department concerned to remove dangling wires in the streets and markets of Swat.

Secretary Ahmed further asked the meeting members to remove illegal flexes, billboards and hoardings in the city. He also ordered the relevant authorities to ensure that pre-approved billboards were redesigned in order to achieve a neat and symmetrical design, instead of causing visual pollution. The secretary concluded by saying that these efforts would eventually help increase tourism in the region.
