Karachi: Chief Minister (CM) Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah vowed to continue a cleanliness drive in the city in collaboration with stakeholders after the month-long ‘Clean My Karachi’ campaign ended, a news source reported. This was announced while he chaired a meeting at the CM House on Monday to review the garbage removal work assigned to deputy commissioners.

The CM told the media that during the month-long campaign, 979,941 tonnes of garbage has been lifted from the city of Karachi. There were 62 temporary garbage transfer stations set up to facilitate this process.
He added that the garbage-removal capacity of the metropolis has increased drastically since 2014, with more than 20 agencies dedicated to waste management. The total outlays of District Municipal Corporations (DMC) were PKR 5.74 billion, which have gone up to PKR 13.79 billion. The waste management of the city was recently handed over back to the respective DMCs.

To further improve the solid waste management capacity, the provincial government set up the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB). They also signed a seven-year agreement with Chinese firms worth USD 52 million for four districts.
The CM outlined a few short-term and long-term initiatives and projects with an aim to continue to keep the city clean, including a new landfill site at Dhabeji.
