Karachi: The federal government has decided to initiate its ‘Clean Karachi’ campaign from tomorrow (August 4) onwards, a news source reported. The proposed initiative to clean the port metropolis will continue for the next two weeks.

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Syed Ali Haider Zaidi said that with the help of the citizens they could clean Karachi in two weeks. He shared this opinion on Twitter, upon which more than 15 private companies, celebrities, and up to 5,000 volunteers responded to him.
As per sources, the ‘Clean Karachi’ drive is being launched on the instructions of Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan, who had directed the authorities concerned to commence with the campaign on an immediate basis. Previously, Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhtar wrote a letter to the prime minister in which he apprised the latter of the civic issues.
The campaign will target all 13 nullahs of the city, which have been blocked by garbage and dirt. In the second phase, the drive will involve lifting of garbage from all areas of Karachi.
Zaidi’s advisor Azhar Laghari said that they don’t plan to dump the collected garbage at landfill sites. He said that a strategy was being devised for utilising it efficiently in the future. He added that volunteers would spread awareness by setting up camps at various points in a bid to make the cleaning drive more effective.
Laghari revealed that they had planned to use the funds allocated for Karachi by the federal government for clearing the city’s garbage.

The representatives of Karachi Port Trust, K-Electric, Karachi Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI), Korangi Association of Trade & Industry, Federal B Area Association of Trade & Industry, and several other associations have pledged their support for the cleaning campaign.
