This water shortage has been attributed to the delay in repairs of the Sangjani turbines and other pipes carrying water to the federal capital. The citizens also alluded to the water tanker mafia, which was profiting off the back of this shortage by charging exorbitant rates for the basic facility.

In response to this, the mayor launched an inquiry into the Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad’s (MCI) water tanker operation and queried why private tanker operators were benefiting from the situation. The citizens’ letter also suggested that a water metering system should be installed in the MCI’s jurisdiction, as this will serve as a water conservation method as well.
