Lahore: Plastics bags are believed to responsible for 50% of the total pollution in Pakistan and in order to make the Clean & Green Campaign successful, a complete ban on their usage is a must, a news source quoted a collective statement issued by social activists Sheikh Suhail, Younas Ansari, Afzal Ansari, Raja Naveed, Ismail Qureshi, Farhan Siddiqui and Malik Tahir Farooq.
Hinting at how plastic bags have made the country altogether more unhygienic, they mentioned that all sewerage lines and drains are seen to be blocked due to these bags. For almost all deteriorated sewerage systems in the country, polythene bags are responsible and the situation is getting worse with every passing day.
A similar situation is currently faced by citizens of Muslim Town, where the blocked sewerage drains have flooded the streets, causing problems for the pedestrians and residents. To make the authority take action against the blocked sewerage pipes and drains, the residents also staged protests the other day.
In this regard, several organisations including Public Head Association has also approached the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government to request for a complete ban on plastic bags. The public is requested to instead shift to using biodegradable bags.
