Though throughout the ages the world has always kept a sceptical eye on the practices done by the indigenous population of the Indo-Pak subcontinent on the birth of a daughter and how it is resented to the extent of murder, there seems to be a lot silver linings when it comes to the Muslim culture of Pakistan. The Cinderella House of Model Town Lahore is one such fine example.
Residing in the heart of Lahore, the Model Town colony, which is famous for its lavish residences and its adjoining areas consisting of 5 marla plots, for mediocre families, houses an exemplary building depicting the profound love of a father for his daughter.
Standing on an expense of 2 kanals of expensive land the Cinderella House gives out the most unique and eye catching sight to the beholders. Like most houses in the ancient city of Lahore, the Cinderella House also has a story about it.
It is said that the House was built in pure affection of a father for his only daughter. During the building process the house was covered by a large canopy to hide it from view as it was intended as a surprise! A great amount of money was spent on its building process and especially the feminine elements which were treaded with great care and embedded into the heart and soul of the building so that any girl, especially the one for who it was meant, should find it home to her deepest desires of luxury and comfort.
The exterior of the house is decorated with miniature towers and the wings of the house have quite a curvy structure, the interior of the house is equally decorated and luxurious. Designed by one of the most famous interior designers of Pakistan, the interior of the house consists of almost everything that could fulfil any child’s dreams. From the latest electronic equipment to the most comfortable furniture the house is sincerely laden with luxuries of all sorts.
Cinderella House consists of various bedrooms with attached restrooms and a magnificent TV lounge housing in itself the latest smart TV and surround sound systems. The house is also secured by an anti-theft alarm system, which is not very common for most residences in Pakistan as most people are not that much aware of the many benefits of a proper home security system.
Where there were rumours about infant girls drowned in milk to facilitate the birth of a boy in future and husbands disowning their wives for the consecutive births of daughters instead of boys, facts like Cinderella House present a totally different picture. It might be true that certain practices may be carried out in the past but in the modern times of literacy and education, where people actually happen to reflect upon their action than to blindly follow the bigoted customs and traditions. It is perhaps true that the birth of a boy is rather seen to be more desirous than the birth of a daughter and through the latest biological scanning and imaging devices one can actually determine the gender of a child before its born, the birth of a baby girl is equally rejoiced as the birth of a baby boy.
Moreover it is believed that while the sons turn out to be rather selfish these days (i.e. ending up making their own houses and moving far away from the parents without calling them for months) the girls on the other hand are more caring and sincere to their parents through and through as they always turn out to be finding ways to take time out from their various household chores and visit their parents every now and then probably to know how their parents were faring.
In these troubled times of inflation, poverty and insecurity, a house is perhaps the best thing a father could give to his daughter to secure her future. Though there is quite a progress in the real estate market these days in Pakistan and much of it can be monitored at Zameen.com, the cost of houses remains fairly high and is rather far away from the reach of most of the population. It is said that most of the population of Pakistan is residing in rented property because their salaries are hardly enough to make the two ends meet and most of them spend their entire lives saving for a 5 marla plot but the expenses always beat them down and all their dreams remain as the beautiful castles in the air throughout their existence.
Asslam-O-Alaikum Shaista
I could not understand what you are trying to tell by this old fantasy story, whereas it has no links with present time and if there is any such housing scheme why you didn’t introduce it properly. I wish you must explain to a man like me who is not so vigilant.
Best Regards
Suhail
Hi Suhail,
What I gather from the article is that Shaista is talking about a particular house in Model Town, not a housing society in Lahore. I think she is, through the article, depicting a profound love for the daughters, cherished by the Muslim fathers in Pakistan as opposed to the stereotyped rumors regarding the preference of sons as compared to daughters.
Hi Shaista,
I liked the story about the dream Cinderella house; you have conveyed diverse messages in one article.
