Karachi: A Chinese energy firm has commenced with its mining operations in Thar Block-1 to facilitate the installation of a 1,320MW coal-based power plant in the area, according to news sources. As per officials, this firm will also build a modern colony to facilitate the relocation of the 600 affected families. These details were brought to the surface during a meeting at the Chief Minister (CM)’s House with CM Syed Murad Ali Shah in chair.
The meeting was informed that this residential installation would be equipped with all basic facilities like school, mosque, park, temple, market and parks. The CM cited the example of Suneri Das Village; constructed by Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC).

Moreover, he approved the energy minister’s appointment as chairman SECMC and gave him the additional charge of the Thar Foundation to ensure social responsibility.
Aside from this Chinese power firm, the National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC) and Shanghai Electric have requested the provincial government for the allotment of a 100-acre land at Jhimpir to evacuate the power generated from wind corridor by constructing and operationalizing a grid station.

The CM also approved the proposal of a Kuwaiti company to build a waste-energy power plant. The company is now applying for a tariff from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) with support from the CM.
