Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Syed Murad Ali Shah and Federal Minister for Climate Change Sherry Rehman have decided to collaborate on various eco-tourism projects including the development of eco-tourism in Keenjhar Lake and Miani Forest, fortifying fisheries cold chains, developing of sustainable fisheries management framework, and de-pollution of Manchar Lake, according to news published on July 3.

The meeting was held at the CM House in which it was informed that the federal government has set up the ‘National Disaster Risk Management Fund (NDRMF) for the financing of the subprojects to strengthen Pakistan’s resilience to climatic and natural hazards. It will enhance the government’s ability to respond to disasters triggered by natural hazards. In addition, the fund will support climate-related interventions for climate change mitigation and adaptation.
Moreover, the meeting attendees were notified that the NDRMF has approved the PKR 1.98 billion project ‘Towards Resilient Marine Ecosystem and Sustainable Blue Economy’. It is expected to be completed within a year and it will be located in the coastal areas of District Badin, Thatta, Sujawal, and Karachi.
Under this initiative, two sub-projects will be included: Utilisation of Salinized Land and Resilient Marine Ecosystem. The Resilient Marine Ecosystem via Sustainable Management of Fisheries Resource ecosystem includes the following aspects:

- Fortification of fisheries cold chain and set up of support facilities on landing centres
- Development of Sustainable Fisheries Management Framework (SFMF) for coastal fisheries
- Replacing harmful fishing gears with the sustainable gear
- Installation of RO Plant for clean water supply along with solar system compatible with RO on landing centres
- Establishment and management of field offices
- Installation of flake ice machine/ chilling unit with cold storage at landing centre
- Establish fisheries protected areas through community engagement
Furthermore, the utilisation of salinized land caused by sea intrusion for aquaculture will include:
- Setting up 24/7 extension services for target districts and training 1,000 fishermen and farmers
- Development of a model demonstration aquaculture farm

- Livelihoods and family nutrition support for families/ women
CM Murad Ali Shah mentioned that the eco-tourism recreational activities at Manchar Lake will require funds of PKR 910 million.
