Quetta: The federal and Balochistan governments on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to construct a shipyard facility in Gwadar, a news source reported. Additional Secretary Defence Production Ghulam Jaffar and Secretary Industry Balochistan Hafiz Abdul Majid signed the agreement.

Federal Minister for Defence Production Zubaida Jalal and Balochistan Chief Minister (CM) Jam Kamal Khan witnessed the event proceedings. Speaking on the occasion, Minister Zubaida Jalal said that the facility would provide repairing and training services in addition to acting as a shipyard.
She further stated that the initiative was of immense strategic importance and the facility would create employment opportunities for the local population in addition to boosting revenues of the provincial government.
‘The project office has been opened in Gwadar and after completion of its feasibility study in two to three years, the construction of the project will be started,’ the news source quoted the federal minister as saying.

Addressing the attendees, Balochistan CM Jam Kamal Khan lauded the initiative; further announcing his government’s plans to promote tourism as well as develop jetty and fish processing units in the port city of Gwadar.
