Lahore: The federal government has officially approved Lahore’s Tunnel Boring Project, a major infrastructure initiative estimated at Rs49 billion, according to local media reports.
The project, aimed at modernising the city’s sewerage system, was first cleared by the Central Development Working Party (CDWP) before receiving final approval from the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC). Securing CDWP’s clearance was a crucial step in advancing the project to the federal level.

The initiative involves constructing a 28-kilometre underground sewer line using tunnel boring technology, which will minimise surface disruption. The route will extend from Larex Colony to the Gulshan-e-Ravi Disposal Station, passing through key locations such as Shimla Pahari, Queens Road, the Punjab Assembly, AG Office, Chauburji, Railway Colony, and Sham Nagar.
Additionally, a second route will serve areas like Gulberg, Zafar Ali Road, Shadman, LOS, and Samanabad, before merging into the main line at Gulshan-e-Ravi.
The project is being funded through a soft loan from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). WASA Lahore, which previously secured PC-1 approval, collaborated with an international firm for feasibility studies and detailed project design.
