Karachi: The federal and Sindh governments will collaborate to restore the Lyari and Malir rivers by building associate tributaries at a cost of PKR 8 billion, a news source reported on March 16. The rehabilitation project was recently approved by the Central Development Working Party (CDWP).

The initiative is a major component of the Karachi Transformation Plan, for which Islamabad has pledged to provide an estimated PKR 611 billion while the provincial government is to cover the remaining cost.
The rehabilitation project is expected to be completed within 12 months. The 21-kilometer-long Lyari and 50-kilometer-long Malir rivers have been polluted by a wide variety of substances including silt, garbage and sewage waste.

It is pertinent to mention that the Karachi Transformation Plan envisages the rehabilitation/development of Karachi Circular Railway (KCR), Greater Karachi Water Supply Project (K-IV), Greenline BRT, Railway Freight Corridor, rivers, nullahs, and storm water drains, along with resettlement of affected people.
